The symbol above is predominantly known as the peace symbol and its origination is largely credited to Gerald Holtom, a designer from West London. He intended the symbol to represent the Direct Action Committee Against Nuclear War (DAC), when he designed it in 1958 for the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND). The symbol is said to be composed of the semaphore symbols for N and D, while placing them within a circle, which is said to represent Earth. Holtem actually gave a new meaning to an ancient symbol, whether or not he knew it beforehand.
